My first introduction to "slab" granite was in 1994, while visiting a high-end custom home in the Bay Area. I couldn't believe how beautiful the custom fitted stone looked, minus the grout lines. Fast forward nearly 30 years and what was once reserved for the elitist of homes, is now available at all price points. Not only has stone become more obtainable, it's now available in a vast array of colors, materials and finishes.

Although it should be exciting, shopping for new stone countertops has been an unclear and oftentimes frustrating process for the consumer. Unlike most shopping experiences, it's one where you leave the store not knowing the price of what you've chosen. The slabs are sold to a fabricator and that is who determines your price. Costs can vary from fabricator to fabricator.
